Late last month my friend told me about a friend of his whose life had just been flipped upside down. And so it goes, I am sharing this heartbreaking story with you.
Chris and his wife Michelle had been married just over a year and were on their way to happily ever after. On July 18th their beautiful baby girl was born here in Austin. Sadly, on July 26th Michelle lost her life due to a complication that went unnoticed. Michelle formed a blood clot in one of her legs and was not noticed due to the natural swelling a mother goes through during pregnancy. I can't even fathom what Chris is going through today. He went from an all time high to losing his best friend and facing raising a child on his own. Sitting in church on Sunday my heart absolutely broke for Chris. Tears filled my eyes because of the shame I felt for being too busy just two nights before to truly open my heart to a good friend that was sharing this story with me. Then the tears stayed because I couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like losing Amanda so unexpectedly.
How it relates.
For those of you that don't know, my company Direct Tire has a program called Positive Patriot. Positive Patriot gives a free set of tires to military veterans and single parents for every thirty sets of tires the company sells. We are only a few sets of tires away from our next gift but I felt in my heart it wasn't tires that needed to happen this time.
Why reach out.
I truly felt God asking me to use the resources that He has given me to do good in this man's darkest hour. See, I have never met Chris but know that nothing he did put him in this unimaginable position. I have donated the same amount that would normally go to tires through Positive Patriot to help Chris prepare for the road ahead. To show Chris that he isn't alone and to give him a little hope that everything is going to be okay.
How you can help.
Many of you are married, have kids or have lost someone you love. I am asking for the help of my family, friends, supporters and fellow Austinites to give up one thing this week in order to love Chris this week instead.
A GoFund Me page has been created to help start a college fund for Clara. No gift is too small and no prayer unworthy. I am asking you to give, if you can, or share this post so others may have the chance. I will be sure to post updates throughout the month to keep everyone up to date and will post all numbers publicly on August 20th. I want everyone to know what we were able to do as a body of people and where every penny went.
What we are trying to accomplish.
I believe that with your help we can help take some of the weight off of Chris' shoulders and show him love he surely needs. Our vision is to setup a college fund for his newborn baby, supply diapers/formula, gas cards, and child care. This truly isn't about one set number. Its all about loving someone like we would want to be loved if the situation was reversed.
